Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, the appellation Touraine extends over a vast wine-growing region between the departments of Indre-et-Loire and Loir-et-Cher, recognized since 1939 as an emblematic terroir of Loire Valley. This historic vineyard, with deep roots dating back to Antiquity, is distinguished by the diversity of its wines and the richness of its terroirs, offering a varied range suitable for all enthusiasts.

History

The vineyards of Touraine have their origins as early as the first century, during the Gallo-Roman period, as evidenced by the remains of amphora workshops discovered in Mougon, in the commune of Crouzilles. In the Middle Ages, vine cultivation is already mentioned by... Gregory of Tours, particularly around the Basilica of Saint-Martin. Since then, the reputation of Touraine wines has steadily grown, to the point of being mentioned at the royal court as early as the 15th century, notably under Louis XI et Francis I. The official appellation was established in 1939, consolidating the vineyard's position within the larger family of Loire wines.

Terroir

Climate

The Touraine vineyards benefit from a climate temperate oceanic, The climate, moderated by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, but also influenced by continental influences, offers an optimal balance between mildness and freshness, promoting a harmonious vegetative cycle for the vine, with moderately warm summers and mild winters, thus allowing for good grape development.

Geology

The Touraine AOC region is characterized by a complex geology. The soils vary mainly between clay-limestone et clay-siliceous. For example, clay-limestone soils, rich in calcite, impart finesse, minerality, and structure to wines, while siliceous soils favor lighter, fruitier wines. This geological diversity contributes to the wide aromatic range of the wines produced.

Grape varieties

The richness of the grape varieties reflects the plurality of wine styles within the appellation. For red wines, the Gamay predominates, often complemented by Cabernet Franc and the cot, bringing structure and complexity. White wines rely primarily on the Chenin and the Sauvignon Blanc, which lend freshness and elegance. Small proportions of Sauvignon Gris, which bring subtle and original notes. The range finally extends to rosés with fruity and lively aromas.

The Touraine AOC is organized around five geographical designations, including Touraine-Amboise, Touraine-Chenonceaux Or Touraine-Oisly, each reflecting specific characteristics depending on the micro-terroirs and grape varieties cultivated.
