In the Middle Ages, the vineyard flourished thanks to the combined efforts of Augustinian and Benedictine monasteries, which developed viticulture, particularly around Sancerre and Menetou-Salon. Sancerre wines were prized at royal courts as early as the 12th century. The phylloxera crisis of 1891 devastated the vineyards but subsequently allowed for a homogeneous replanting, favoring the dominant grape varieties of today, primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The appellation obtained its recognition as an AOC in 1936 for white wines, then in 1959 for red and rosé wines.
